WHAT IS CANINE HYDROTHERAPY?
Hydrotherapy is a relatively new and innovative treatment that can be used to help dogs in pre and post operative conditions. It is used as orthopaedic rehabilitation, helping dogs with several conditions such as Hip Dysplasia and other arthritic conditions. It encourages weight loss without the force on joints that running and walking can create and therefore helps condition muscles.

Swimming and massage or gentle stretching in water allows recovery to start much earlier following surgery or injury. The warm water and increased range of limb movements, which may not be possible on land, help to promote circulation which in turn aids healing. The hydrostatic pressure of the water can also have an anti-inflammatory effect which relieves pain and reduces swelling. More comfortable or more natural limb movements with increased range of motion are therefore facilitated.

IS THIS TREATMENT SUITABLE FOR MY DOG?
A full history of your dog will be taken and your vet will always be contacted to obtain confirmation that your dog is suitable for hydrotherapy and has no conditions that would contraindicate swimming.

No dog will be allowed to use the treadmill without their veterinary surgeons permission – this also applies to fitness work.

WILL MY PET INSURANCE PAY FOR THE TREATMENT?

Many pet insurance companies will pay for hydrotherapy if your veterinary surgeon refers you.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HYDROTHERAPY?

Swimming helps to improve general fitness and cardiovascular stamina, improves muscle tone and is helpful in recovering from injury or surgery and improves fitness, especially in the management of obesity.

Muscle wastage begins within 3 days of any immobilisation so to prevent further weakness or injury it is important to rebuild, through safe exercise, any muscles that have deteriorated. It is better to swim dogs in heated water since cold water causes constriction of the blood vessels near the skin and to the superficial muscles (those just under the skin) which restricts the flow of blood making the muscles less efficient. It is also considered to be a natural anti-inflammatory through its ability to reduce tissue swelling.

Hydrotherapy in conjunction with veterinary treatment can significantly improve the quality and rate of healing following surgery or traumatic injury. After surgery the careful use of hydrotherapy can help with rehabilitation and increase the chance of a successful return to full fitness. Enhancing general health and fitness can aid convalescence and speed up recovery.

Hydrotherapy has specific effects on body tissues

• Relief of pain, swelling & stiffness

RESISTANCE JETS
Resistance jets are used to increase the workload of a patient. The animal runs or walks against the current jets increasing exercise intensity. Pedigree show dogs, working and racing dogs can use this feature for strength and cardiovascular improvement.

HOW LONG IS A TREATMENT SESSION?
A full-length session is 25 minutes but this depends on your dogs’ medical condition, needs and ability. Some dogs only spend a few minutes on the treadmill on their first visits but this may quickly rise to a full 20 minutes as your dog heals or their fitness improves. We are guided by what is best for your dog. Shower and drying facilities for your dog are available after each session

DOG TRAINING
It is my belief that almost all dogs can be trained once its owner has knowledge of basic handling, together with the skills required to maintain the well being of their animal.

I aim to teach responsible dog ownership, resulting in confident dog owners with happy, well mannered pets. All training is done with kindness using praise as a reward. I believe that dogs have an important position in society and I aim to teach clients the importance of responsible dog ownership within the community as well as how to build and improve their relationship with their dogs inside the home and within the family environment.
